‘Lady Mary’s Travelling Shoes’ is the blog where I plan to record and share the journey I take through a Research Masters (ResM) in English at the University of Plymouth, England.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

My dissertation will focus on The Turkish Embassy Letters (1763) by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, an 18th century English aristocrat, whose glittering life has, until fairly recently, tended to obscure critical attention on her writings, as has the fact that little was published in her own name during her lifetime. Both feminism and post-colonialism have played a key role in reclaiming The Turkish Embassy Letters for modern audiences, although the re-evaluation has not always been favourable. I am interested in examining the English literary and cultural landscape at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries that helped to shape a text that is now heralded as a key example of travel writing, and to look in particular at contemporary representations of Turkey and the so-called ‘East’.
